Pathway to a Greener Family

The connection between a healthy environment and healthy families is clear, and people are searching for ways to “go green.” Simple, inexpensive changes can go a long way toward a healthier lifestyle.

Try these 5 easy steps to greener living:

  1. Start recycling. Teach your children the hows and whys of recycling and reusing. Instead of using paper towels, switch to reusing old sheets, towels, and blankets for cleaning.
  2. To save money and live healthier, make and use simple, basic supplies for house cleaning. Vinegar cleans and disinfects; baking soda cleans and makes a great scrub; and lemon juice disinfects and sanitizes so there’s no need for harmful anti-bacterial products.
  3. Minimize the use of plastics whenever possible. Avoid plastic containers and food wrap, especially with warm foods. If you choose to use plastic containers, look for the recycle number  on the bottom. Use numbers 1, 2, 4, and 5; and avoid as much as possible the numbers 3, 6, and 7, as they are believed to leach harmful chemicals into food—especially when heated. Even better, switch to glass bowls or plant-based plastics for preparing and storing foods.
  4. Learn about natural alternatives for pest control. Pesticides have been shown to pose serious health risks, especially to children. Cinnamon, mints, and cayenne pepper are safe, easy ant repellents.
  5. Go organic. Choose chemical- and hormone-free foods because they taste better and protect your family from harmful additives.

Incorporating these simple, inexpensive ideas can be rewarding and will create a healthier life for you, your family—and Mother Earth!
