Taking Care of Yourself

When you first bring your new baby home, those first few weeks will feel like a baby-centered cocoon of feeding, changing, bonding and (hopefully!) sleeping. But eventually, you’ll have to get back to the real world. Adjusting to that world with a new baby in tow can be tricky, which is why it’s important to take care of yourself so you can be the best parent you can be.

The good news is there are loads of activities for new moms and their babies, from exercise and music classes to mom’s groups and outings. Joining a playgroup with other moms is a great place to start—if you don’t know of one, form one yourself! Chances are, any mom and baby you see in the store or on the street would be thrilled to have the company of others, just like you. Most libraries, bookstores and community centers offer baby-and-me activities of some sort, and classes can be found for everything from sign language to yoga.

Taking time for yourself is just as important as getting out with your baby. It’s important to do some things just for you, so you can go back to your family feeling relaxed and recharged. Exercise is not only a great pick-me-up; it will also help you get your pre-baby body back faster. A trip to the hairdresser will keep you feeling pretty when it’s tough enough to find time for a shower, and few things can get those endorphins going like a shopping excursion, no matter how big or small.

One of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family in your post-baby life is to schedule alone-time with your spouse. Make a regular date to spend time by yourselves whenever it works best for you, even if it’s just 20 minutes before bedtime. Hiring a babysitter is ideal, even if you’re not ready to leave the baby. Have someone come in and watch her while you have a quiet dinner alone, or take a simple walk around the block.

Whatever you do, don’t feel guilty for making time for yourself. You deserve it, and the old saying, “If Mom’s not happy, nobody’s happy” is true!
